TV review: HOUSE season 8 episode 5 - The Confession

Finally, an episode of House that reminded me of what the show is all about.. fun but with a dose of morality/ethics questions that, if you're like me, leave you pondering about what your answers would be long after the episode has ended..

Don't get me wrong, the first four episodes were great, especially the first, and while I'm proud that a Filipino was cast as a main character, I just didn't enjoy thoset as much as this latest instalment..

First off, welcome back Chase & Taub.. While Thirteen has come and gone, it's a great relief to see two more familiar faces in the team.. Old team (guys) vs new team (girls).. I think this will is an interesting dynamic that House is sure to exploit to satisfy his queer sense of humor..

The episode was about a man who's so looked up to in his community for all the good things he's done that when they found out he needed a kidney, practically everybody jumped up at the chance to see how they could help.. But this gentleman has a secret or secrets that he feels compelled to tell, feels compelled to confess..

From previous episodes we found out that Adams' husband cheated on her and in previous seasons Chase did something that he told to his then wife Cameron who ended up leaving him because of it (I won't tell what it was, look it up). This episode played on both doctors' conflicting experiences and it was nicely done. The episode did not offer concrete answers of what is right and what is wrong, but leaves it to the viewers to determine how deep their shade of gray is..

We know the healing power of a confession to a person's psyche, but unless the person confessed to is a priest who is not allowed to do anything about it except hear you out and give you absolution (I feel for priests in this regard), what if the person you've confessed to is directly affected by it and will be hurt by it? While the person who has confessed had rid himself of a heavy burden, how about the person he's passed the burden to? Are they better off not knowing what your secret is after all?

The episode showed how the patient dealt with it.. He actually had the luck (if you can call it that) to tell his wife he cheated to alleviate the feeling of guilt he had and then see how much pain it's caused his wife and then later erased the first confession by opting to deal with the demons he brought on himself on his own and saw the pain completely disappear from his wife's face..

Well, we're not all as lucky.. So, what's your shade of gray? Are you team Chase (not tell so you're the only one who's damaged) or are you team Adams (tell, live with the consequences and risk damaging the other person as well)..

Okay, that was the moral/ethics part.. The fun part was House playing on Taub's paternity issue (yep, he now has two babies) and which Taub has risen to as a better person (proud of Taub here).. He has surprised House and that's always a good thing.. The other fun part is how House played mind games with Foreman..

And how can this not be funny? Hahaha..
